Brewing Basics: How To Brew With A Chemex Coffee Maker


If a coffee maker was an actor, the Chemex coffee maker would be an Oscar winner.

It has that perfect blend of brewing talent and style (did you see the bow tie!?) and simply exudes confidence in every single brew.

No wonder it’s on permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. And it was named one of the 100 best designed products of modern times by the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Thankfully you don’t have to be an A-lister to get your hands around this beauty.

C’mon, let’s heat things up…

Brewing Basics - Chemex - Stay Roasted


  Chemex coffee maker (this 8-cup version is the most popular)

•  Chemex filters (we recommend these)

 Kettle (or way of pouring hot water)



• 6 tbsps (42g) of medium-coarse ground coffee beans

•  25 oz (700g)  of hot water (60 seconds off the boil is perfect)



1.  Insert the filter into the Chemex with the three-folds side next to the spout.

2.  Rinse the filter by pouring in about 5oz (150g) of hot water in a slow circular motion and draining off through the spout.

3.  Add the ground coffee – then in a slow, circular motion pour just enough hot water 2oz (60g) to cover the grounds. Wait 30 seconds.

4.  Continue pouring to halfway up the filter, wait 20 seconds and then pour in the remaining water.

You should now have around 20oz of brewed coffee. Divide it into two large servings or 4 small ones if you like.

To brew a full 8 cup batch, double the ingredients and top up your hot water every time it reaches halfway down the filter.

BONUS: A rarely discussed fact about Chemex is that it’s made of heat resistant glass. So you can keep leftovers warm by placing your Chemex directly on your gas stove top on low after you brew.
