From The Roaster
COMMONWEALTH JOE’S UNIQUE STORY
Nearly ten years ago, a mother and her teenage son worked together at a coffee shop in Culpeper, Virginia. She was the roaster, he was the barista, and together they shared a passion for amazing coffee. When that coffee shop closed down, the owners gave the roaster their state-of-the-art equipment, and she started roasting coffee for friends and family.
One day in 2012, her son and three of his college friends came over to taste his mom's coffee and they couldn't believe their taste buds. We are those four friends. We started Commonwealth Joe to help a local roaster bring her talent to the world, and to breathe new life into an ancient craft in the Virginia and D.C. region.
We feature customized roasts of sustainably-sourced coffee varietals from around the world, with flavor profiles inspired by the beauty, history, and character of places in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our shared goal: to make amazing coffee more approachable.
Everyone who works for Commonwealth Joe has an opportunity to learn coffee and business skills they want to learn. We invest time into our team to build skills worth pursuing. Many of our baristas are our training managers, photographers, graphic designers, account managers and marketers for our company.
We are also the proud owners of The Java Shack, Arlington's Original Coffee House (founded in 1996 as the first coffee shop in the area). The former owner started as a wholesale client of ours, and in 2015, we picked up the reigns. In fact, the previous owner joined the Commonwealth Joe team to help build up the shop, and our team has never been better.
