HIGHER GROUNDS TRADING CO STANDARDS
At Higher Grounds Trading Co. they stick to high standards not only for ethical & environmental reasons, but also because they’re obsessed with quality: they believe these standards produce the best-quality coffees around.
Close relationships with farmers around the world help bring them delicious coffee from the field to your cup. They are a Certified B Corp with a commitment to sustainability. As part of their sustainability initiative, Higher Grounds commits to using only ceramic mugs, no paper. Mugs are taken in donation and guests keep them or return them.
HOW IT ALL STARTED
It all started with a trip to Mexico. Co-founder Chris Treter met his good friend, and now our longest standing farmer-partner, José Perez Vazquez during a post-graduate internship. The trip proved to be a catalyst for a coffee company, an importing cooperative, a non-profit, and more importantly access to rights for coffee farming communities across the globe.
Until then, Maya Vinic only had small, local markets in which to sell their product. A trade relationship with Chris—and ultimately Higher Grounds Trading Co.—meant the opportunity to reach a much larger international audience, along with the possibility to sell a lot more of their coffee.
Our partnership with Maya Vinic formed the very foundation of our identity: a commitment to long term, mutually beneficial trade relationships with on-going interactions that include water projects, emergency relief, educational collaborations, and a tireless commitment to peaceful, resilient, and sustainable communities.
THE CIRCLE MODEL
Our circle model. We provide coffee drinkers with the opportunity to engage in a cycle that begins with, and returns to, our partners in coffee-growing regions. We’re fully engaged in that cycle, sourcing coffee directly from farmers through ownership of our importer Cooperative Coffees and circling back to the farmers and their communities via our sister nonprofit, On the Ground.
