Have you ever tried the best chicory coffees? Do you want a load of health benefits along with your everyday cup of coffee? Or are you trying to wean off of caffeine? Chicory coffee is right for you! We considered the price, flavor, roasts, and other factors when reviewing these chicory coffees. The flavor of the chicory coffee varies depending on the chicory to coffee ratio, as well as the origin of the chicory and the coffee.
Some of the coffees we reviewed contain only chicory, leaving caffeine at the door and letting that dark, woody flavor take the front seat. The roasts of the beans and root change your drink’s flavor and caffeine content and can make or break whether it’s the right cup for you. That’s why we included a range of roasts so we could find chicory coffees for everybody. All of these chicory coffees impressed us, so we want to share them with you!
This Cafe Du Monde Coffee Chicory is a ground combination of coffee and chicory. It has caffeine and is a dark roast. This coffee-chicory blend is great for people looking for a history of fine flavor. It is from the French Market Coffee Stand that was original. It is very popular in New Orleans and has been in the French Market ever since 1860. The French Market Coffee Stand is open 24 hours every day, all year.
What stands out?
We loved that the blend was already ground. It made our mornings easier. All we had to do was wake up and brew the blend without having to grind it. We also love that it has so much history behind it. Being from an original coffee stand from New Orleans means Cafe Du Monde knows what they are doing. They have been beloved ever since the 1860s.
What cons did we manage to find?
We didn't find the flavor notes in this blend that we did in other blends. Although having it pre-ground makes it convenient, it also takes away from some of the flavors. The dark roast can be too extreme for some people's liking. But the chicory-to-coffee ratio is perfect, and all and all, this is a great way to start your day.
These K-Cup compatible pods are a medium roast caffeinated mix of Arabica coffee and chicory. These coffee and chicory cups are perfect for the person on the go. All you have to do is put the cup into your Keurig, and you’re set for the day. Knowing that your coffee beans are responsibly sourced will make that cup of coffee and chicory all the more special. The caffeine will keep you alert throughout your day. The medium roast is perfect for someone who doesn’t like their coffee too dark or too light- it’s just right.
Why did it make our list?
We loved being able to pop this right into our Keurig and not worry about brewing it. It makes for an easy morning and a wonderful delight when it’s done brewing. The Arabica coffee beans add a robust flavor and mix well with the chicory. It feels good drinking a cup that is responsibly sourced with a company that has good community service relations.
What is not ideal about it?
With the use of a Keurig comes a loss of flavor that home-brewing methods bring. It is also sometimes nice to brew coffee with your own hands- it is a good morning routine that lets you know the day is starting. The medium roast leaves some taste to be desired if you like your coffee dark and strong. It is a little lackluster without the use of sugar, which not everyone wants.
This French Market Coffee and Chicory is a medium-dark roast blend of Arabica coffee and chicory. This product isn’t our Best Value for no reason. Coming in at roughly $5, you are getting a major bang for your buck. This roast leaves little to be desired, and you will forget you are drinking such cheap coffee and chicory. It is Kosher-certified which means dietary restrictions won’t get in the way of enjoying this incredible blend. With the ability to customize your roast and caffeine level, this blend has something for everyone.
Why are we impressed?
What we loved most about this coffee is that every member of our team could find a roast they liked, whether they didn’t want decaf and wanted a cup at night, preferred their coffee on the light side, or were addicted to dark roasts. We could even get 100% chicory! It was impossible for us to believe the price of the chicory coffee blend we were drinking. For people on a budget who are looking for a great, customizable cup of chicory coffee blend, this is the product for you.
What negatives must you be aware of?
Having multiple roast levels means there is less focus put into each one, resulting in roasts that aren’t completely perfect. Although this is a great cup of coffee and chicory blend, you are still getting what you are paying for. The beans aren’t Fair Trade certified. And the chicory to coffee ratio is a bit off, with stronger notes of each one depending on which blend you get. But all in all, this chicory coffee blend has something for everyone and is a great product considering the price.
This is water-soluble chicory that will make your mornings easy and delicious. This product is great for people who are just looking for chicory and want a quick, easy morning. The company has been in business since 1858! All you need to do is get a glass of warm water and pour in some of the mixtures. Mix it with a spoon, and it’s ready! This is the fastest way to get your morning chicory.
What stands out?
We loved how easy this chicory is to make. There was no hassle of brewing. You don't even need to turn on the kettle- if you want to, you can heat up your water in the microwave! Or, if you like it cold, mix it in lukewarm water and add some ice cubes. We also loved having abled that was purely chicory. We were really able to explore the chicory flavors in an easy-to-use setup.
What cons did we manage to find?
We found that it was hard to get the water-to-chicory ratio correct. Sometimes the chicory wouldn’t stir in completely, and there would be chunks of it in our drink. We also missed having coffee in our cup- chicory alone has no caffeine, and it may be hard to adjust to having no caffeine in the morning for some. But if you're looking for a caffeine-free alternative and enjoy the taste of chicory, this is the drink for you!
These chicory root granules are a great, flavorful alternative to coffee with many health benefits. Nothing feels better than brewing a great, flavorful cup of chicory in the morning. This chicory is a dark roast and has a deep, earthy flavor. If you’re trying to wean off of coffee, this is the drink for you! You can slowly combine it with less and less coffee until your habit is broken. It also has a world of health benefits. This chicory was sourced in India and is of the highest quality out there.
Why did it make our list?
We loved the dark, nutty flavor of this chicory drink. It is perfect for people who like dark coffee. It is delicious black or with a creamy drink added to it. It was nice to go through our days without having coffee jitters. Starting your day with a deep, flavorful cup of coffee is unlike anything else. And knowing that it is keeping your body in tip-top shape is a great added benefit.
What is not ideal about it?
This cup of chicory was a little too strong for some members of our team. Some of us needed that extra punch of caffeine and ended up mixing it with coffee during our trials. The flavor is very earthy and might have too much umami for some people. It is high in fiber, so until you get used to it, it may make you gassy. We loved this chicory drink, but some people may need caffeine to make it through the day or may not be able to handle such rich flavors.
This is a dark-roast chicory coffee blend that is Kosher certified. This chicory coffee blend is perfect for people who like a strong flavor or a creamy drink if you add cream. It makes for great iced coffee on a hot day. You can’t go wrong with this chicory coffee blend. It has an automatic drip, decaffeinated, medium roast, and regular grind options so you can personalize your drink. We loved testing out this product and found it to be a great way to start our days.
What are our favorite features?
We loved that we could choose between automatic drip, decaffeinated, medium roast, and a regular grind chicory coffee blend. It is a smooth, strong drink that brings a smile to our faces. A one-to-one ratio of this drink and milk will bring you straight to the streets of New Orleans. Reily Foods is a family-owned business, and we love supporting businesses that have existed in the same family for generations.
What could be better?
We found that having the chicory coffee blend pre-ground made it lose some of its flavors, and it might have a stronger flavor if it came in bean form. It is also designed to drink with cream or milk, so if you like a black cup of coffee, this may not be the drink for you. We had to steep this drink, so it’s not as easy to make as instant or Keurig chicory coffee blends. But all in all, we enjoyed this drink, and it was a great start to our days.
Things to Consider
Do you want to try a delicious coffee mix or alternative? The chicory coffee is for you! Blends we’ve chosen have the perfect combination of chicory and coffee. Making a hot cup of this New Orleans traditional drink is an easy way to start the day. And regular chicory drinks can be enjoyed anytime later, since they don’t contain caffeine.
What’s Chicory Coffee?
Chicory coffee is made by steeping the roots of the chicory plant. They are roasted, ground, and brewed. Chicory is in the dandelion family. Chicory coffee tastes a little bit like coffee because its flavors are earthy. It can be had on its own or combined with coffee. It came to life in the 1800s in France because they had a shortage of coffee. People were panicking, so they tried chicory root as an alternative because they missed coffee. The same thing happened in New Orleans when there was a coffee shortage in the Civil War.
Now it is used as an alternative to coffee that has no caffeine or is used in a blend with coffee. It has loads of health benefits and can also be used for that reason.
There are many different features to consider when buying a chicory coffee. One is what’s inside. Each chicory coffee blend consists of different things on the inside. Another thing is flavor. Flavor can depend on the roast of the coffee, the coffee to chicory ratio, and the brewing method. Also, consider the roast. Roast affects taste and caffeine levels. Next, think about the caffeine content. This is dependent on the roast, the amount you drink, how much coffee (if any) is in the chicory coffee blend, and how it is brewed. The country of origin of both the coffee beans and the chicory root will affect the flavor of your chicory coffee, as well as the working conditions of the workers who made your coffee possible. Lastly, the best way to drink your chicory coffee is up to you, but you have many options.
Every chicory coffee blend has different things inside, whether it’s the type of brewing method, the chicory to coffee ratio, where the coffee beans are from, where the chicory is from, if its ground or not, etc.
The roast of the coffee determines both the flavor and the caffeine content. Darker roasts have a deeper, stronger flavor because the beans were processed for longer. Dark roast coffees have more caffeine by weight, but light roast coffees have more caffeine by volume.
The caffeine content of chicory coffee blends depends on a couple of things. For one, it depends on the chicory to coffee ratio. More coffee means more caffeine because chicory has no caffeine. It also depends on the roast of the coffee and if you measure by weight or by the scoop.
Dark roasts have more caffeine by weight, whereas light roasts have more caffeine by the scoop. You can also get decaf coffee which has little to no caffeine.
The country of origin is very important in coffee and chicory root. Along with the roasting process, it is the single most important factor in what the coffee will taste like. In addition, it adds or takes away from the carbon footprint of your coffee, depending on how far it has to travel. Also, different countries have different working conditions, so where your coffee comes from can affect how the workers who harvested and grew your coffee were treated.
Single-origin coffee is popular because it isn’t a blend of different kinds of coffee.
Best way to drink
The best way to drink chicory root coffee depends on the kind of coffee you want. If you want caffeine, opt for a blend that has a lot of coffee in it. If you are trying to break a coffee habit or want a drink for nighttime, then you should opt for a decaf blend or straight chicory.
Cafe Du Monde Coffee Chicory is already ground, so you can just immediately brew it however you brew your regular coffee, whether that’s with a French press, a Chemex, pour-over, or with a machine. You can also make cold brew overnight. Community Coffee Single-Serve K-Cup is designed for Keurigs, so you can put the cup in your Keurig and brew it that way. That is the best way to drink it if you need to just not worry about the ins and outs of making coffee.
Chicory brings a load of health benefits along with it that your regular cup of coffee just doesn’t have. It has the prebiotic fiber inulin, which is prebiotic that feeds gut bacteria. It reduces inflammation, fights bad bacteria, and improves the absorption of minerals. Chicory helps aid bowel movements due to its high fiber content. It also improves blood sugar control which is incredibly helpful for people with diabetes. It regulates appetite, which can help you maintain a healthy weight. It is also simple to add to your diet. All you need to do is brew a cup of chicory and coffee blend instead of a normal cup of coffee, and you can reap all of these health benefits for yourself.
It depends. It mostly depends on the caffeine levels. The caffeine levels are determined by the chicory to coffee ratio, the roast of the coffee, and the brewing method. The FDA says
